Short track speed skating is a form of competitive ice skating. In competitions, typically four to six athletes skate on an oval ice track. The rink itself is 60 m by 30 m, which is the same size as an international-sized ice hockey rink. Short track speed skating originated from regular speed skating, the events were held with mass starts. That form was mostly practiced in Canada and the United States, instead of the international form, where the athletes skated in pairs. At the 1988 Olympics, held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada short track was a demonstration sport. It was changed to a full Olympic sport in 1992 and has been part of the Winter Olympics since. The program changed from four events in 1992 to eight events in 2002. The following events are held for both men and women: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and the 5000m relay for men, and the 3000m relay for women.
